What is SPOKEN BODY?
There’s a powerful link between art and life that can help us heal, transform, and—let’s be honest—sometimes just survive. We’re all about a fresh aesthetic that captures the real, raw moments of people's lives, not just the polished, picture-perfect forms of dance or technique. For us, life’s messy, wonderful moments feed our art, and our art, in turn, shines a light on the real, often messy issues in our lives.
Enter The Spoken Body® Process—a holistic method that combines the wisdom of the body with movement, dance, and imagination. It’s like the body gets its own TED Talk, but with more movement and less PowerPoint. We use all kinds of artistic tools to dig deep into our emotional and psychological lives, tackle societal issues, and spark our creative juices.
At the heart of this process is a deep belief in the power of the body and movement. We think the body holds every little bit of our life experience—so when we move, we’re not just stretching out a muscle, we’re talking about life. Movement is the body’s native language, and we see it as life itself in motion. It’s personality and soul showing off, and dance is where the body, emotions, and imagination throw a party together. We believe that movement and dance aren’t just for professional dancers; they’re tools for everyone to live a more grounded, creative life—one that supports healing and maybe even a little social revolution. Through movement, we can express every human emotion, from "I’m having the worst day" to "I just found out I’m a genius!" Here are the principles we follow (and trust us, they work):
The body is a vessel for awareness and understanding. Think of it as your personal life GPS.
There’s a deep connection between the body, emotions, and our mental/imaginal worlds. They’re like a reality TV show you can’t stop watching, except they actually work together.
Our body’s sensations, gestures, and postures reveal our past, culture, and current states of being. Yes, the way you sit probably says a lot about your week.
Engaging in expressive movement, dance, and art exposes patterns and recurring themes in our lives. If you’ve danced like nobody’s watching and then realized you were dealing with some unresolved feelings—well, that’s totally normal.
When we create art—be it a dance, drawing, poem, song, or performance—we’re also processing life. It’s like therapy, but with more glitter.
The symbols in our art speak to our life circumstances. Your random squiggles probably mean something deep…or they just mean you need more coffee.
The way we work as artists reflects how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world. So if you’re a hot mess with a paintbrush, well…that’s probably how you feel about everything else too.
When we embody positive visions through art, we create images that guide us in life. You can be the hero of your own story—just make sure you’re not wearing a cape in public unless it’s Halloween.
Art allows us to express both our struggles and celebrations. So go ahead, dance out that frustration—or that joy. There’s room for both.
As we explore creativity and the arts, we learn to apply those lessons to every part of our life. Just think: if you can improvise a dance move, you can probably improvise a conversation with your boss.
The bottom line? Art, especially when it’s rooted in the body, helps us make sense of the chaos, find joy in the struggle, and maybe even turn our emotional baggage into something beautiful.
Our Mission
Spoken Body is dedicated to providing a safe space for deep exploration of your body through movement. To be a guiding hand for a gentle reminder of your brilliance by creating a bridge between art and life through movement exploration.
Who can participate?
All bodies are welcome! You don’t have to have any dance training to know how to move, to be you and to be seen. Before we are anything else, we are human, all with our own pasts, traumas, talents, gifts and for many of us these things are in deep hibernation. This work can help you reawaken to your true, authentic self.
What is a typical session like
We will use Movement Ritual as created by Anna Halprin to warmup and get started. We will then use Body Part Explorations to see what wants to be embodied and explored. Through movement, imagination, drawing and language, we will bring your exploration to the conscious mind. By using “I see, I fee, I imagine” language we will explore your drawings further and will develop awareness of what your body has in store for you. We will develop awareness of anatomy and posture, and the relationship of body parts to each other and to the whole body.
